Don't negotiate with yourself.
We all do it.
Some tips:
I don’t know about you, but I have daily negotiations with myself. "I can drink that extra cup of coffee", "If I only walk for 20 minutes today, that will be fine", "That extra piece of chocolate won’t hurt" and on it goes. For those negotiations there is a solution that isn't as hard as you’d think.
1. Write down 1 or 2 small, clear decisions for the day before it starts (e.g., “1 coffee today,” “walk 30 min,” “no screens after 10 PM”).
When the moment comes, your only job is to execute, not to think. Over time, this builds trust in your own word.
2. When tempted to negotiate, close your eyes for 10 seconds and visualize how you’ll feel after sticking to your plan (energized, proud, lighter). Associating pleasure with follow-through helps end bargaining.
3. Practice gratitude. Not just for the big things, but the small, quiet blessings: warm tea, a kind word, a soft pillow. Gratitude rewires your brain to see abundance where you once saw lack and that will give you the motivation to do it.
4. When negotiation starts, ask: What would greatness do? This reframes the decision from short-term comfort to long-term identity. Linking choices to greatness primes the prefrontal cortex to override impulsive bargaining and aligns action with higher values.
5. Finally, ask yourself: What is no longer needed? Old beliefs? Habits? Stories you’ve outgrown? Let them go with love. Shedding the old makes space for the new neural pathways you’re creating.
